Trying to trace the history of Barbera is no easy task since there is very little documentation regarding its history. The existence of vineyards in Piedmont planted with Barbera is mentioned for the first time in around 1500 in a land registry and the earliest description of the grape was found in a treaty issued in 1798 in which it is included in a list of high quality red grapes. Its high adaptability to various soils and climates resulted in its rapid diffusion and extensive cultivation over the centuries. The later 1800's witnessed a noticeable evolutive process in both production techniques and in the quality of the wine.
